January 1 – Bhagavadgita Chapter 1; Verses 1-2 (DAY1)

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच |
धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः |
मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत सञ्जय ||1||
 

Dhitarāśhtra uvācha

dharma-khetre kuru-khetre samavetā yuyutsava

māmakāṇḍavāś chaiva kim akurvata sañjaya (1) 

த்4ருத1ராஷ்ட்ர உவாச1 
4ர்மக்ஷேத்1ரே கு1ருக்ஷேத்2ரே ஸமவேதா1 யுயுத்1ஸவஹ |
மாமகா1: பா1ண்ட3வாஶ்சை1 கி1மகு1ர்வத1 ஸஞ்ஜய ||1|| 

Dhritarashtra said:

1. What did the sons of Pandu and also my people do when they had assembled together, eager for battle on the holy plain of Kurukshetra, O Sanjaya?

Commentary: Dharmakṣhetra – that place which protects Dharma is Dharmakṣhetra.  Because it was in the land of the Kurus, it was called Kurukshetra.

Sanjaya is one who has conquered likes and dislikes and who is impartial. 

सञ्जय उवाच ।

दृष्ट्वा तु पाण्डवानीकं व्यूढं दुर्योधनस्तदा ।

आचार्यमुपसङ्गम्य राजा वचनमब्रवीत् ||2|| 

Sañjaya uvācha
dihvā tu pāṇḍavānīka vyūha duryodhanastadā
āchāryamupasa
gamya rājā vachanamabravīt (2)

ஸஞ்ஜய உவாச1 
த்3ருஷ்ட்1வா து1 பா1ண்ட3வானீக1ம் வ்யூட4ம் து3ர்யோத4னஸ்த1தா3 |
ஆசா1ர்யமுப1ஸங்க3ம்ய ராஜா வச1னமப்3ரவீத்1 ||2||

Sanjaya said:

2. Having seen the army of the Pandavas drawn up in battle array, King Duryodhana then approached his teacher (Drona) and spoke these words:
