 January 3 – Chapter 1; Verses 7-10

अस्माकं तु विशिष्टा ये तान्निबोध द्विजोत्तम ।

नायका मम सैन्यस्य संज्ञार्थं तान्ब्रवीमि ते ॥ १-७॥

asmāka tu viśhihā ye tānnibodha dwijottama
nāyakā mama sainyasya sanjñārtha
tānbravīmi te (7)

அஸ்மாக1ம் து1 விஶிஷ்டா1 யே தா1ன்னிபோ34 த்3விஜோத்11 |
நாயகா1 மம ஸை
ன்யஸ்ய ஸன்ஞார்த1ம் தா1ன்ப்3ரவீமி தே1 ||7||

7. “Know also, O best among the twice-born, the names of those who are the most distinguished amongst ourselves, the leaders of my army! These I name to thee for thy information.

भवान्भीष्मश्च कर्णश्च कृपश्च समितिञ्जयः ।

अश्वत्थामा विकर्णश्च सौमदत्तिस्तथैव च ॥ १-८॥ 

bhavānbhīhmaśhcha karaśhcha kipaśhcha samitiñjaya
aśhwatthāmā vikar
aśhcha saumadattis tathaiva cha (8)
 

4வான்பீ4ஷ்மஶ்ச1ர்ணஶ்ச1 க்1ருப1ஶ்ச1 ஸமிதி1ந்ஜய: |
அஶ்வத்1தா2மா விக1ர்ணஶ்ச1 ஸௌமத3த்1தி1ஸ்த1தை2வ ச||8||

8. “Thyself and Bhishma, and Karna and Kripa, the victorious in war; Asvatthama, Vikarna, and Jayadratha, the son of Somadatta.

अन्ये च बहवः शूरा मदर्थे त्यक्तजीविताः ।

नानाशस्त्रप्रहरणाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः ॥ १-९॥ 

anye cha bahava śhūrā madarthe tyaktajīvitā
nānā-śhastra-prahara
ā sarve yuddha-viśhāradā(9)

அன்யே 1 3ஹவ: ஶூரா மத3ர்தே2 த்1யக்11ஜீவிதா1: |
நானாஶஸ்த்1ரப்1ரஹரணா: ஸர்வே யுத்34விஶாரதா3: ||9||

9. “And also many other heroes who have given up their lives for my sake, armed with various weapons and missiles, all well skilled in battle.

अपर्याप्तं तदस्माकं बलं भीष्माभिरक्षितम् ।

पर्याप्तं त्विदमेतेषां बलं भीमाभिरक्षितम् ॥ १-१०॥ 

aparyāpta tadasmāka bala bhīhmābhirakhitam
paryāpta
twidam ete bala bhīmābhirakhitam (10)

அப1ர்யாப்11ம் த13ஸ்மாக1ம் ப3லம் பீ4ஷ்மாபி4ரக்ஷித1ம் ।

1ர்யாப்11ம் த்1வித3மேதே1ஷாம் ப3லம் பீ4மாபி4ரக்ஷித1ம் ||10||

10. “This army of ours marshalled by Bhishma is insufficient, whereas their army, marshalled by Bhima, is sufficient.

Commentary: The verse is differently interpreted by different commentators.  Sridhara Swami takes the word aparyaptam to mean ‘insufficient’. Ananda Giri takes it to mean ‘unlimited’.
