 January 5 – Chapter 1; Verses 14-19

ततः श्वेतैर्हयैर्युक्ते महति स्यन्दने स्थितौ ।

माधवः पाण्डवश्चैव दिव्यौ शङ्खौ प्रदध्मतुः ॥ १-१४॥ 

tataḥ śhvetair hayair yukte mahati syandane sthitau
mādhavaḥ pāṇḍavaśhchaiva divyau śhaṅkhau pradadhmatuḥ (14) 

த¹த¹: ஶ்வேதை¹ர்ஹயைர்யுக்தே¹ மஹதி¹ ஸ்யன்த³னே ஸ்தி²தௌ¹ |
மாத⁴வ: பா¹ண்ட³வஶ்சை¹வ தி³வ்யௌ ஶங்கௌ² ப்¹ரத³த்4மது¹: ||14||

14. Then also, Madhava (Krishna), and the son of Pandu (Arjuna), seated in their magnificent chariot yoked with white horses, blew their divine conches.

पाञ्चजन्यं हृषीकेशो देवदत्तं धनञ्जयः ।

पौण्ड्रं दध्मौ महाशङ्खं भीमकर्मा वृकोदरः ॥ १-१५॥ 

pāñchajanyaṁ hṛiṣhīkeśho devadattaṁ dhanañjayaḥ
pauṇḍraṁ dadhmau mahā-śhaṅkhaṁ bhīma-karmā vṛikodaraḥ (15) 

பா¹ஞ்ச¹ஜன்யம் ஹ்ருஷீகே¹ஶோ தே³வத³த்¹த¹ம் த⁴னந்ஜய: |
பௌ¹ண்ட்³ரம் த³த்⁴மௌ  மஹாஶங்க²ம் பீ⁴மக¹ர்மா வ்ருகோ¹த³ர: ||15||

15. Hrishikesa blew the “Panchajanya” and Arjuna blew the “Devadatta”, and Bhima, the doer of terrible deeds, blew the great conch, “Paundra”.

अनन्तविजयं राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।

नकुलः सहदेवश्च सुघोषमणिपुष्पकौ ॥ १-१६॥ 

anantavijayaṁ rājā kuntī-putro yudhiṣhṭhiraḥ
nakulaḥ sahadevaśhcha sughoṣha-maṇipuṣhpakau (16) 

அநந்த¹விஜயம் ராஜா குந்தீ¹பு¹த்ரோ யுதி⁴ஷ்டி²ர: |
நகு¹ல: ஸஹதே³வஶ்ச¹ ஸுகோ⁴ஷமணிபு¹ஷ்ப¹கௌ¹ ||16||

16. Yudhisthira, the son of Kunti, blew the “Anantavijaya”; and Sahadeva and Nakula blew the “Manipushpaka” and “Sughosha” conches.

काश्यश्च परमेष्वासः शिखण्डी च महारथः ।

धृष्टद्युम्नो विराटश्च सात्यकिश्चापराजितः ॥ १-१७॥ 

kāśhyaśhcha parameṣhwāsaḥ śhikhaṇḍī cha mahā-rathaḥ
dhṛiṣhṭadyumno virāṭaśhcha sātyakiśh chāparājitaḥ (17) 

கா¹ஶ்யஶ்ச¹ ப¹ரமேஷ்வாஸ:ஶிக²ண்டீ³ ச¹ மஹாரத²: |
த்⁴ருஷ்ட¹த்³யும்னோ விராட¹ஶ்ச¹ ஸாத்¹யகி¹ஶ்சா¹ப¹ராஜித¹: ||17||

17. The king of Kasi, an excellent archer, Sikhandi, the mighty car-warrior, Dhristadyumna and Virata and Satyaki, the unconquered,

द्रुपदो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः पृथिवीपते ।

सौभद्रश्च महाबाहुः शङ्खान्दध्मुः पृथक्पृथक् ॥ १-१८॥ 

drupado draupadeyāśhcha sarvaśhaḥ pṛithivī-pate
saubhadraśhcha mahā-bāhuḥ śhaṅkhān dadhmuḥ pṛithak pṛithak (18) 

த்⁴ருப¹தோ³ த்³ரௌப¹தே³யாஶ்ச¹ ஸர்வஶ: ப்¹ருதி²வீப¹தே¹ |
ஸௌப⁴த்³ரஶ்ச¹ மஹாபா³ஹு: ஶங்கா²ன்த³த்⁴மு: ப்¹ருத²க்¹ப்¹ருத²க்¹ ||18 ||

18. Drupada and the sons of Draupadi, O Lord of the Earth, and the son of Subhadra, the mighty-armed, all blew their respective conches!

Commentary: This blowing of conches announced the commencement of the battle.

स घोषो धार्तराष्ट्राणां हृदयानि व्यदारयत् ।

नभश्च पृथिवीं चैव तुमुलो व्यनुनादयन् ॥ १-१९॥ 

sa ghoṣho dhārtarāṣhṭrāṇāṁ hṛidayāni vyadārayat
nabhaśhcha pṛithivīṁ chaiva tumulo vyanunādayan (19) 

ஸ கோ³ஷோ தா⁴ர்த¹ராஷ்ட்ராணாம்ஹ்ருத³யானி வ்யதாரயத்¹ |
நப⁴ஶ்ச¹ ப்¹ருதி²வீம் சை¹வ  து¹முலோ வ்ய⁴னுநாத³யன் ||19 ||

19. The tumultuous sound rent the hearts of Dhritarashtra’s party, making both heaven and earth resound.
